ALL THE TIME.This happens way too often.
Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder in which a person, who is normally capable of speech is unable to speak in given situations, or to specific people. Selective mutism usually co-exists with shyness or social anxiety.
Watching ‘My child’s not perfect’ on ITV1. Where six year old Katherine, normally a happy, upbeat & talkative little girl at home, completely shuts down and turns mute at school and in social situations.
so heartbreaking.
Sounds alot like me when i was little. I got diagnosed with SM when i was 7. Got told i would ‘grow out of it’ by my teens. I would go weeks without saying a single word. Whilst i’m far better then i was back then, a small bit of it still remains and to this day i still find it hard to communicate in large groups of people or even certain small groups…Its a bloody hard feeling to describe.
I hope she finds her voice and confidence one day, because SM sucks (y)
